Virgo and Corvus (Roll over image for labels)   HOME INDEX BACK NEXT

Virgo, the virgin, stretches across a wide area of the southern sky during the spring each year. Its brightest star is first-magnitude Spica. Within this constellation are hundreds of galaxies that are part of the Coma-Virgo galaxy cluster, and many of these can be seen through amateur telescopes.

To the south of Virgo is the distinctive shape of Corvus, the crow, and to the north is bright Arcturus in the constellation Bootes.
