This nice sun pillar appeared just at sunset as members of the Astronomical Society of New Haven were setting up their telescopes for a public observing event at Silver Sands State Park in Milford CT. There are also traces of a faint halo around the Sun. The thin clouds that produced these atmospheric effects did hamper our observing later in the evening, but we still got to observe Venus, Mars, a 2-day-old Moon, and a few other objects.
