Spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici

Star-hop chart

NGC 5005.is a reasonably bright spiral galaxy. Through a typical amateur telescope it appears as an elongated oval with a bright center. Just over 1/2 degree to the southwest (but out of the field of this image) is another nice spiral, NGC 5033.

This image was taken on a night with a bright nearly-full Moon in the sky. The Moon was rising in the east and the galaxy was far away in the northwest sky, so I gave it a try. Even under these conditions, the galaxy reveals a decent amount of detail in its mutiple tightly wound spiral arms.
