Galaxies in Eridanus

NGC 1723 has an unusual shape that includes a central bar, a ring, and two dim spiral arms. It is estimated to be about 110 million light years away.

The three galaxies below are, from right to left, NGC 1721, 1725, and 1728. Although it is hard to tell by looking, measurements suggest that they are farther away, in the range of 170 to 200 light years distant.

NGC 1723:

Magnitude 11.7
Apparent Size 2.6' x 1.8'
Distance (light yrs) 110 million
Right Ascension 4:59.4
Declination -10 59
Field of View 22' x 17'
