NGC 1023 is a very elongated elliptical galaxy, and its oblong shape is evident through a medium-sized amateur telescope. It is part of a galaxy group that includes NGC 891, NGC 925, and others, all of which are roughly 30 million light years away. In this image, the galaxy NGC 1023A appears as a blue patch sticking off the left (east) side of NGC 1023. It is classified as an irregular galaxy.
